Curse the Road

Curse the Road
Your bags are packed and you’re set to go
The future hangs in the palm of your hand
And there you stand, with your head held high
The half moon lights the highway and it’s all you know
The road ahead looks clear, and it looks bright
And with all your might, as you effortlessly fly
But when the road spits you out and kicks the dust back up in your eyes
Don’t second guess, don’t lose your step, whatever you do, don’t comprise
When the winds won’t seem to stir, and the days all start to blur
And the engine that’s been driving you is stuck
Try not to curse the road when it has you feeling down on your luck
With your dreams and what is real and a grip on each
But it’s easy to lose track when you’re on the run
And some damage done, but that’s all it ever was
So the half moon and horizon seem so out of reach
But that never was a reason not to try
Or wonder why the road unravels like it does
But when the road spits you out and kicks the dust back up in your eyes
Don’t second guess don’t lose your step, whatever you do, don’t compromise
When the towns all look the same and you’re forgetting why you came
And the line that cast you out begins to reel
Try not to curse the road when you can’t remember why you’re at the wheel
So when you’re down and out just try your best to remember
All the splendor and let it wash in with your love
Because you know there will never be another way
For you to dream of
But when the road spits you out and kicks the dust back up in your eyes
Don’t second guess don’t lose your step, whatever you do, don’t compromise
When your cover's all been blown, and your weariness has shown
And you feel the fear start running all your dreams
Try not to curse the road when you feel like you are running out of steam
Try not to curse the road--I swear it’s not as long as it seems

Bags at the Door

Bags at the Door
I watched the sun go down on that quiet Midwestern town
One that I could barely pronounce the name of
I didn’t know what to expect, when the nighttime came in full effect
I felt the stars aligning up above
So leave your bags at the door
And in the morning they might be there no more
And at the very least, you’ll have spent some time without them
But when the morning came to get its fix
It hit me like a ton of bricks
But two thousand pounds of feathers would have been more or less the same
I washed the shame all off my skin
As I felt a new day come again
Lost my voice trying to convince you
That this was more than just a game
So leave your bags at the door
And in the morning they might be there no more
And at the very least, you’ll have spent some time without them
As I set off in the night, I began to question wrong from right
With the words you’d written down stuck in my pocket
Just cause you close a certain door off to everyone else in this world
You shouldn’t close your eyes until you lock it
So leave your bags at the door
And in the morning they might be there no more
And at the very least, you’ll have spent some time without them
Yeah leave your bags at the door
And in the morning they might be there no more
And at the very least, you’ll have spent some time without them

Dandelion

Dandelion
The city started raining on me
The skyline had darkened far as my eyes could see
The streets were running rivers and my mind was sending shivers
For more reasons than I could ever speak
The city started raining on me
So I thought of your clean face and a new pair of shoes
These things never mattered much to you
With your thick skin and our wandering hearts
Will they find a way, will they find a way?
So I snuck into Georgia where the pines grew in a line
Fields of red and blue and green
Lingered longer than anything I’d ever seen
But the pines hadn’t seen the rain for weeks
So I thought of your clear mind and a stranger with the blues
These are the things that mattered most to you
With your thick skin and our wandering hearts
Will they find a way, will they find a way?
You’re just a girl in California under a sky I’ve never seen
I’ll say I’ve found a way
To your dandelion heart, if we weren’t so far apart
But if you’re just a dandelion blowing in the breeze
Dandelion blowing in the breeze
Dandelion blowing in the breeze
Would you blow towards me?

City Dweller
You’ve been tied to a chair, and I don’t hold the key
Well I guess I’m coming to you
Because I know you sure as hell ain’t coming to me
You were tired of the way
The way that people drove slow
You were wondering why
They were even on the road in the first place
But now you don’t have to drive at all
The city’s not for me
The city’s not for me
But I have reason to believe that you might be
That you might be
Like that quiet park in Chelsea
From your voice over a wire, to the letters I never sent
But now we’re singing all your favorite songs in the rain
In the street outside your rent control apartment
A piece of me has died, but far more’s been brought to life
And I think it’s the first time cause if you left, walked away
You know I might try
The city’s not for me
The city’s not for me
But I have reason to believe that you might be
That you might be
The oasis that I need

Long Lost Friends

Long Lost Friends
Don’t wait for a better time
Don’t look for some foolish sign
Begin, begin, begin
Your heart is alive and well
I won’t deny that it’s been through hell
Through hell
So look for another flame
And not someone else to steal your blame
And I know you’ll find yourself again
As the paper reunites with the pen
Like long lost friends
Long lost friends
Your heart always finds the good
But not always in the ways that it should
Because your head longs for something real
It won’t act on what the heart says it feels
And it feels
But your soul is a special kind
As it knows that the head and heart will find
Somewhere where they all can sing
For the love and the joy they will bring
As long lost friends
Long lost friends
Long lost friends
Long lost friends

Ghosts of Carolina

Ghosts in Carolina
The ghosts in Carolina, they are close friends of mine
They stick with me through the night
They’re always there to lend a hand
And keep my bones from dry land
But I think I should let them go
Cause I don’t want these ghosts to be the only thing I ever know
So tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
Yeah tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
I’ve always done my best when I had no one watching me
When I’m swimming in a sea of unfamiliarity
But when I feel that gaze, I find myself trying in ways
That I simply never have before
So shut the blinds and lock the door
Because tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
Yeah tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
There’s a big moon on the rise
It hangs above my thin disguise
I hear the voices with the light
And they’re all coming out tonight
So tell the ghosts in Carolina and the ones in Tennessee
That I know now what’s best for me
And when I find myself alone
On those darkened mountain highway roads
Tell them just to leave me be
Leave me be, oh leave me be, leave me be
Leave me be, oh leave me be, leave me be
Because tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
Yeah tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
Yeah tonight I’m sleeping with the light on
Yeah tonight....

Burning Building
All the things that you left in the past
They must stay there
Because your past is a burning building
And your skin is beautiful
All the plans that you have made
You must not change them
For anything or anyone
Because your mind is beautiful
All the roads that you used to take
You must find new ones
Because your enemies await
And your face is beautiful
When the papers land at your door
You must not read them
Because they won’t give you a reason to sing
And your voice is beautiful
All the things that you left in the past
They must stay there
Because your past is a burning building
And your skin is beautiful
Your skin is beautiful
Your skin is so beautiful

Sittin’ on Top of the World
It was in the spring, one sunny day
My sweetheart left me, lord she went away
And now she's gone, and I don't worry
Cause I'm sittin’ on top of the world
She called me up from down in El Paso
She said "Come back, darlin, lord I need you so"
But now she's gone, and I don't worry
Cause I'm sittin’ on top of the world
If you don't like my peaches, don't you shake my tree
Get out of my orchard, let my peaches be
And now she's gone, and I don't worry
Oh lord, cause I'm sittin’ on top of the world
So don't you come here runnin', holding out your hand
Gonna find me a woman, just like you found you a man
But now she's gone, and I don't worry
Oh lord, cause I'm sitting on top of the world
It was in the spring, one sunny day
My sweetheart left me, lord she went away
And now she's gone, and I don't worry
Cause I'm sitting on top of the world
And now she's gone, and I don't worry
Cause I'm sitting on top of the world

Skeleton Keys
Well you’re making lots of noise with your brand new bag of tricks
As if silence was a ploy to keep your position fixed
When you’re living on the run, your bones begin to shake
When you hold it up to the sun, that’s when you’ll know if it’s a fake
In a world where what you can do outweighs what you once could
A pocket filled with skeleton keys, that won’t do you much good
So now the view becomes obscured when you’re told all that’s at stake
I will rest when it’s assured that I have no reason to be awake
So now you’re trying all the doors with intentions in plain sight
What they keep was never, ever yours, and now they’re closing out of spite
In a world where what you can do outweighs what you once could
A pocket filled with skeleton keys, that won’t do you much good
So now your sprint becomes a crawl, just like everybody else
I don’t want nothing, nothing at all, just go and prove it to yourself
But if peace is what you seek, then you won’t have to look too far
Every journey to it is unique, but they’re all lit by the same stars
